If all else fails, the doctrines of the deity of Jesus and the trinity ought to get Christians to scrutinize every doctrine of their faith starting with these two doctrines, and yet it is precisely these two doctrines that above all keep Christians from scrutinizing every doctrine of their faith and especially these two doctrines. Put differently, Christians should be snapped out of their cozy recourse to invoking “mystery” above all by the blatantly unreasonable doctrines of the deity of Jesus and the trinity, and yet sadly it is precisely these two doctrines that above all lead Christians to invoke “mystery” in the first place, rather than using their God-given reason to think through their faith, rejecting what is false and keeping/discovering what is true. Nothing has been more detrimental to the history of theology than recourse to “mystery”, and nothing is more detrimental in the thinking of Christians, and other religious people for that matter, than recourse to “mystery”. Believed to be the panacea, it is in reality the ultimate poison.
